Community anniversary event featured Mass, presentations, speeches, an open house and barbecue
Good Shepherd Catholic Elementary School in East Gwillimbury celebrated its 25th anniversary on Thursday, May 9, 2019. The milestone celebration featured Mass officiated by Father Roy Roberts, followed by a special school presentation emceed by Principal Richard Amos with remarks by local dignitaries including: Chair Dominic Mazzotta; School Trustee Theresa McNicol; Director of Education, Ab Falconi; CSC Chair Lars Opalinkski, Mayor Virgina Hackson; and Michael Salomie who represented MP Scot Davidson. Salomie also presented YCDSB’s Chair and Director with a plaque to recognize the Board’s recent 50th Anniversary.
The 25th Anniversary celebration also featured student performances by JK-Grade 3 students who sang Humble and Kind and Grade 3-8 students who sang, Voice of the Shepherd.
Many parents and guardians, former staff and friends of the school attended the celebration. In the evening there was also an open house featuring student artwork and a barbecue for the school community.
About Good Shepherd CES
Good Shepherd CES opened for the 1993-1994 school year under the direction of Principal Jim McDermott. Originally there was a team of 27 staff members who served over 300 students. Since then, the East Gwillimbury school has seen many changes including technology upgrades such as smartboards in every classroom, new outdoor play equipment for the school’s youngest learners, and improvements to its school grounds including an outdoor learning area and additional trees that were planted around the perimeter of the school by students and staff.
Good Shepherd is proud to offer a variety of sports teams and clubs. The school also has an Intensive Support and Assessment Centre that provides students who have learning disabilities with additional resources and support from specially-trained staff.
“Good Shepherd is blessed with a tight-knit community that feels like one big family,” says Principal, Richard Amos. “We have a wonderful and active Catholic School Council and a supportive parent community that works together with school staff and our parish to make Good Shepherd a terrific place for students to learn and grow. Faith is central to all we do at Good Shepherd and our students truly enjoy celebrating Masses and the Sacraments together as a community. I thank everyone who came out to help us celebrate our 25th Anniversary!”
