Twelve-year-old Ira Nabong is living his dream by starring as young Simba in the Toronto production of Disney’s “The Lion King.” The Good Shepherd CES student discovered his love of acting two years ago when he entered an after-school performing arts program and quickly found his way to the big stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
“We’re very proud of him,” said Irene Nabong, Ira’s mother. “We’re happy that he has something he loves at such a young age.”
Ira learned that Disney was holding an open call for auditions for the Mirvish production in Toronto, but he didn’t want to miss his sister’s dance competition that was happening the same weekend. Instead, he submitted a video of his acting. The video caught the eye of the casting crew, and soon, Ira was auditioning in front of a Disney director with five other boys for the young Simba role.
Disney informed Ira that he and two other boys would play young Simba (since child actors can only perform a certain number of times per week). This started an intense period of rehearsing six days per week to ensure everyone was ready for a production of this quality.
Ira must have shined in rehearsals because he was honoured with performing on opening night.
“He’s having fun,” said Irene. “He loves being on stage. Sometimes he gets a little nervous, but then he gets on stage and just has fun.”
Congratulations to Ira and all the other YCDSB students who bring joy to others by sharing their God-given talents!
